Manitowoc police early this morning apprehended a fleeing motorist after their vehicle went airborne at a roundabout at Memorial Drive and Waldo Boulevard.
The driver fled the scene on foot only to be captured nearby. Detective Sergeant Mike Stone tells SeehaferNews.com that the vehicle involved in the crash was undrivable.
Stone indicated the unidentified motorist was operating at a high rate of speed.
Update from the Manitowoc Police Department:
On Tuesday, June 9th, 2020, at approximately 06:21 a.m., the Manitowoc Police Department was dispatched to 1716 Cedar Grove Drive (Cedar Grove Drive Apartments), in the City of Manitowoc, for a check welfare complaint. The caller reported that a male subject was passed out inside a black Chevrolet Impala, which was parked in the parking lot.
At 6:32 am, MTPD Officers were outside of their squad cars attempting to make contact with the male subject, but he immediately fled the scene in the black, Chevrolet Impala. By the time the officers got back to their squad cars, they lost sight of the black Chevrolet Impala and they were initially unable to locate the vehicle.
At 6:35 am, the Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch Center (JDC) received a 911 call that there was an accident near the roundabout on Memorial Drive and Waldo Blvd involving a black Chevrolet Impala. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene and MTPD Officers set up a perimeter. A MTPD K9 Unit responded to assist.
At 7:09 am, the suspect was located thanks to an alert citizen, who notified MTPD of the suspect hiding under a bridge by the little Manitowoc River. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident. The suspect was identified as a 33 year-old Manitowoc male. There were no injuries as a result of the accident. The suspect was arrested and held at MTSO Jail on charges of Operating a motor vehicle while impaired, 1st Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, Obstructing an officer, Possession of Methamphetamine with intent to deliver, Possession of Fentanyl with intent to deliver, Possession of drug paraphernalia, and a Probation Hold. Additional traffic citations will be issued to the suspect pending the investigation of the accident.

Manitowoc Police say the video from a City of Manitowoc traffic camera is a reminder of the dangers of impaired driving.
