The Manitowoc Police Department has issued a statement regarding the incident Friday night where a vehicle ended up in the Manitowoc River. The following was sent to SeehaferNews.com by LT. Mark Schroeder.
“On 07-24-20, at approximately 1900 hrs., Manitowoc Police Officers were dispatched to the parking lot adjacent to 75 Maritime Dr, due to reports of a vehicle in the Manitowoc River. Initial reports indicated that a vehicle had been traveling on Maritime Dr, left the roadway for an unknown reason, and struck a tree. The vehicle continued on, ending up in the river. The vehicle was occupied and kayakers in the area attempted to assist the operator, but the vehicle sank.
A responding Manitowoc Police Officer, removed his duty gear, dove in, and attempted to assist the driver, but was thwarted by the depth and clarity of the water.
The vehicle was eventually located by the Manitowoc County Dive team and removed by HWY 42 garage.
The operator of the vehicle, a 26-year-old Manitowoc man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
This incident was supported by the Manitowoc City Fire Dept, WI State Patrol, Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Dept., United States Coast Guard and the Whitelaw Fire Dept.
