Dr. Gregory Grose, a Prevea Health urologist who sees patients in Sheboygan, Plymouth and Manitowoc, is being recognized by the maker of a revolutionary treatment for enlarged prostate – a condition that affects nearly 40 million men in the United States.
The medical term for enlarged prostate is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or BPH. Not to be confused with prostate cancer, BPH occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. Symptoms of BPH often include urinary problems such as frequent urination, a weak or slow urinary stream and a urinary stream that stops and starts. This can lead to interrupted sleep, loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.
“Over 40 million men in the United States suffer from enlarged prostate, yet only 12 million men seek treatment for their condition,” said Dr. Grose. “The symptoms associated with BPH range from embarrassing to life altering. Medication is often the first-line therapy for enlarged prostate, but relief can be inadequate and temporary. While some surgical options can be very effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction and retrograde ejaculation.
