Dr. Gregory Grose, a Prevea Health urologist who sees patients in Sheboygan, Plymouth and Manitowoc, is being recognized by the maker of a revolutionary treatment for enlarged prostate – a condition that affects nearly 40 million men in the United States.
The medical term for enlarged prostate is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or BPH. Not to be confused with prostate cancer, BPH occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. Symptoms of BPH often include urinary problems such as frequent urination, a weak or slow urinary stream and a urinary stream that stops and starts. This can lead to interrupted sleep, loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.
“Over 40 million men in the United States suffer from enlarged prostate, yet only 12 million men seek treatment for their condition,” said Dr. Grose. “The symptoms associated with BPH range from embarrassing to life altering. Many men retreat from their normal lives due to the severity of their symptoms.”
Medication is often the first-line therapy for enlarged prostate, but relief can be inadequate and temporary. While some surgical options can be very effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction and retrograde ejaculation. The UroLift System®, created by NeoTract, is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses permanent implants to relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating or removing prostate tissue.
Dr. Grose is now designated as a UroLift Center of Excellence by NeoTract for his extensive training in and use of the UroLift System. “The UroLift System has fundamentally changed how I treat men in my practice who have symptoms associated with BPH,” said Dr. Grose. “Patients are experiencing rapid symptom relief and are typically able to discontinue the use of ongoing BPH medications.”
Dr. Grose sees patients at the Prevea Sheboygan Medical Office Building, 3113 Saemann Ave., the Prevea Plymouth Health Center, 825 Walton Dr., and the Prevea Manitowoc Health Center, 4810 Expo Dr. He performs the outpatient UroLift System procedure, which can be completed in about 20 minutes, at the Sheboygan Surgery Center and HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan.
The UroLift System procedure is also performed by Prevea Health urologists in Green Bay. Drs. Daniel Degroot and Jennifer Burns are also designated as Urolift Centers of Excellence for their extensive training in and use of the UroLift System.
