The legalization of recreational marijuana will be a part of Governor Evers’ two-year State budget he’ll release to the full Legislature next Tuesday night.
Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig told Seehafer News there’s a misconception about the potency of the drug.
“A lot of times people think back to the Vietnam War when marijuana was 4% THC, but through chemical processing, there are things that can enhance it to make it eighty to ninety percent THC,” Hartwig explained. “I don’t know what that would do to a child. There is concern from both an enforcement and driving standpoint.”
The drug would be regulated and taxed in much the same way the state does with alcohol. A 2019 Marquette Law School Poll found nearly 60 percent of respondents support legalizing marijuana.
The Sheriff went on to say, “One of the things always up for debate is you’re potentially legalizing another substance that can cause impairment in driving. That’s one of my major concerns with it.”
