A 23-year-old Algoma woman has now been officially charged with the drowning death of her infant daughter.
Chayanne J. Wierichs has been charged with Neglecting a Child Causing Death, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Some more details about the incident have also been released.
Police were called to an apartment in the 400 block of Fourth Street on February 9th, where they found an unresponsive nude infant lying on a couch. Wierichs was reportedly doing CPR on the child, but an officer took over until EMS arrived. The child was then pronounced dead.
Police report that Wierichs had left her child in the bathtub with only a few inches of water to go clean the kitchen, and came back to find the girl face down in the water.
They also noted that she was living in deplorable conditions, specifically noting that the refrigerator was unplugged, and had rotting food in it, as well as stains littering the carpet, and walls, with garbage strewn on the floor.
A search of the apartment uncovered methamphetamine and a glass smoking device.
Wierichs is being held on a $25,000 bond with an initial appearance scheduled for tomorrow (February 25th).
