Robert J. Cherney, age 97, a resident of Manitowoc, entered eternal life on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at River Woods Place in Manitowoc.
Robert was born on November 10, 1923 in the Town of Franklin to the late John and Mary (Havlovitz) Cherney. During World War II, Robert had served in the United States Army in the European Theatre. He was a Prisoner of War in Germany until being liberated by the Allied Forces. Robert was awarded the Purple Heart and received his honorable discharge in 1945. On August 4, 1945, Robert married Marian Kozlovsky at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Denmark. She preceded him in death on April 27, 2015. Robert had worked as a welder at Manitowoc Shipbuilding for most of his working career.
Survivors include Robert’s daughter, Karen (Richard) Zeitler, Gays Mills; grandson, Christopher (Sarah) Zeitler, Middleton; two great grandchildren, Keagyn and Kendall; sister, Marilyn (Roger) Schreiber, Kiel; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Cherney; wife, Marian; and grandson, Todd Zeitler.
Funeral services will be held at Noon on Monday, March 15, 2021 at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall, 1114 South 21st Street, Manitowoc. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Ben Johnson with entombment to follow at Calvary Mausoleum. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 88. Following the committal services, a luncheon for family and friends will be held at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center located on the south property of the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home. The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall on Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at Noon.
