Congressman Mike Gallagher is sponsoring a proposed constitutional amendment that would cap the size of the US Supreme Court at nine justices.
The move comes after President Biden announced he would create a commission to explore reforms to the Supreme Court. The Wisconsin Republican said in a statement, “we don’t need a commission to know court-packing is a radical idea that would undermine confidence in one of our country’s most important and trusted institutions.”
Talk of so-called “court-packing” began after Senate Republicans’ nomination of Justice Amy Coney Barrett just eight days before the November election.
Gallagher’s proposal is co-sponsored by five GOP members in the US House.
