Manitowoc County has joined with the entire state in suspending the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine while Federal Agencies investigate six cases in which women who received the single-dose drug later developed blood clots.
While this is concerning, Manitowoc County Health Officer Stephanie Lambert clarified the situation, saying “blood clots are extremely rare. Of the 6.8 million vaccines given only six women had these blood clots and unfortunately one passed away. This is a sign that our safety surveillance system is working and events that occurred in less than one in a million people have been detected and actionable.”
State Health Officials made the move yesterday after the Centers For Disease Control and the Food And Drug Administration recommended the course of action saying the pause could last days.
Lambert emphasizes that the vast majority who’ve received the single-dose vaccine have experienced no or mild side effects.
“If you’ve received the latest J&J vaccine in the last three weeks and have contracted a severe headache, abdominal, or leg pain or experienced shortness of breath we encourage you to seek treatment immediately,” Lambert said. “But remember these symptoms occur in less than one in a million people.”
A decision is expected later today on whether to hold a Johnson & Johnson mass vaccination clinic Scheduled for Friday at the Expo Grounds.
