Milwaukee Public Schools say the district’s bus contractors were paid almost 60-percent of their contracts despite not carrying any students last year.
A shortage of drivers has forced dozens of bus routes to be left uncovered this month as students return to classes.
The bus contractors accused the district of not paying them, meaning they didn’t have the funding to retain their drivers.
M-P-S disputes that, saying it paid more than $8 million.
The bus companies say they told the school district they would need two months’ warning to make sure they had enough drivers.
They say they got only half of that.
