The Milwaukee Brewers would still like to hang on to 26-year-old catch Jacob Nottingham, but the team designated him for assignment Thursday.
Nottingham was removed from the 10-day injured list just before the move.
He had been recovering from off-season surgery on his left hand but was out of minor-league options.
If Nottingham isn’t claimed off waivers or traded over the next week, Milwaukee could assign him outright to the minor leagues.
There was no spot for him on the major league team’s bench because starter Omar Narvaez is off to a strong start and backup catcher Manny Pina is healthy again.
