Members of the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee have voted to expand a mental health center in Madison.
Governor Tony Evers proposed borrowing up to $66-million to build a new unit at the Mendota Juvenile Treatment Center.
The move would help reduce the number of inmates in the Lincoln Hills School for Boys and Copper Lake School for Girls.
Wisconsin Department of Health Services head Karen Timberlake says Thursday’s vote is “an important first step” toward closing the facilities in Irma and reforming the state’s juvenile justice system.
