Emotions ran high while the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee was deciding not to increase the funding for the Wisconsin Black Historical Society.
Republican Representative Mark Born of Beaver Dam said nobody was promoting the increase – it was just a part of Governor Evers’ rejected budget plan. That led Democratic State Senator LaTonya Johnson of Milwaukee to call Born a racist.
Born pointed to a Black history display in a Capitol hallway.
Johnson said she didn’t even know about it until Thursday and it is a poor substitute for funding the historical society.
