An obstacle that many school districts state and nationwide are facing has actually posed aproblem for years: the teacher shortage.
Manitowoc Superintendent of Schools Mark Holzman tells Seehafer News his district sees fewer applicants for general teachings positions than we’ve seen in the past. “I feel like we’ve been very fortunate to be able to do a really good job of recruiting our staff,” Holzman said. “We have a great HR team. The best recruitment is our own people telling their colleagues or their friends who are teachers about all the great things going on in our district or that it’s a good place to work.”
Holzman admitted, though, it is challenging.“Historically, we used to get hundreds of applications for teachers,” he explained “Now we’re 10, 15 or 20 and in some areas like special education, a calculus teacher, physics or business ed those are difficult to find, we’ve been fortunate to find a few. I always say we only need one, but we do know that teachers are a key indicator in elevated student achievement.”
The MPSD Superintendent added, “So, if you have a great teacher you have a great opportunity for kids to be successful.”
