With people getting the gardening and planting itch, business has been brisk at Hartman’s Town and Country Greenhouse in Manitowoc.
Co-owner and plant specialist Tom Hartman tells Seehafer News there simply aren’t “enough hours in a day somedays and business has been good and we can’t complain. The weather’s finally turned around here, open the floodgates, and here we go.”
Hartman commented late last week that we had 4-straight nights of frost, however, “The 10-day outlook looks good. And, the weatherman on TV said the other night that this could be our last frost until fall which would be a great thing.”
The greenhouse owner says they get this question every day now, “Is it time to plant?” And the simple answer is yes and no.
“There are things you could plant out there that can tolerate the cooler weather or soil,” Hartman explained. “But there are sensitive things and we normally don’t plant the sensitive stuff until at least the last week in May like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers or even impatiens and begonias. Those will not tolerate any frost and I’m hoping we’re past that point.
Hartman explains “there are things you can do in terms of container plants, and if there are cool nights, scoot those into the garage but be sure to return them outdoors the next day again.”
