Wisconsin could lose federal COVID relief funds if G-O-P leaders cut Governor Evers’ proposed education budget.
The Legislative Fiscal Bureau said Wisconsin might not qualify for more than $1.5 billion if Republicans decide not to maintain funding for schools.
They had been planning to cut state school spending to reflect the incoming federal funding, but this puts those plans in jeopardy.
Joint Finance Committee Co-chair Mark Born says that the governor shouldn’t be accepting funds that prevent the legislature from adjusting the budget.
Evers spokeswoman Britt Cudaback says lawmakers wouldn’t have a problem if they simply pass the governor’s budget as written.
