Mishicot has learned who it will play in the state semifinals of the WIAA Girls Fastpitch Softball Tournament next week.
The 22-3 record Indians received the 2nd seed in Division-4 and face-off against 3rd seeded Phillips in the 2nd game Tuesday morning at 10:00 AM. The opener at 8:00 matches #1 seed, Blair-Taylor, and 4 seed Juda/Albany with the winners squaring off for a state title Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 PM.
Seehafer News spoke with Mishicot Coach Dawn Shimek following her team’s 8-to-2 win over Iola-Scandinavia in Wednesday’s Sectional championship.
“It was one of our goals all season to make it to the state tournament,” she said. “I have a lot of girls who played on the basketball team that went to state, so we were happy and full of excitement, but it was almost business-like. We are not done yet. We still have two games we need to win, and this is just part of the journey to get there.”
Shimek on how important it was that she has a number of players off the state basketball champs in late February?
“It was huge,” she told Seehafer News. “Many of those girls were on the runner-up team in 2019, so they have that experience. They know how to win.”
This appearance marks the 4th time the Mishicot program has made it to state.
Shimek on playing the tournament rather close to home at UW-Green Bay.
“It will be different, but the positive to that is it is going to be very businesslike,” she said. “We are going to stay at home, we are going to sleep in our beds, we are going to ride the school bus there, and treat it like any other game to calm the nerves.”
And, Coach Shimek said “it would be a dream come true” to make it two gold balls for the Mishicot community in the same calendar year.
The WIAA has announced due to venue capacity, there will be no general admission ticket sales for the state tournament. Each team has a 300-ticket allowance for pre-sale.
