The historic Schuette Building in downtown Manitowoc has a new tenant, effective today.
Quilting in the Valley has opened for business on 2-floors of the completely renovated building located at 814-A South 8th Street. Business owner Lisa Furleigh tells Seehafer News she’s been coming up here for decades.
“I have driven up to Door County I don’t know how many times, and I have always enjoyed this stretch between Manitowoc and Algoma. I just think it is beautiful country,” she said. “When we knew we were going to open in Wisconsin, we came up on a real estate hunt and were driving around, saw this building and said ‘That’s it. We’re done.’”
Furleigh says this is her first venture in Wisconsin, but she has five quilting locations in neighboring Illinois. Her home base is in LaSalle, but she also has stores in Peoria, Champaign, Moline, and Rockford.
Furleigh has a special fondness for quilting, calling it an art form using fabrics.
“It’s something that you can do with our hands, and make something absolutely stunning, durable, and useful that you can give away to someone you love,” she explained. “It just shows how much you care for people when you give them something you made with your own two hands.”
At the Schuette Building, she explained they’ll use a second level as a quilting retreat space “For up to eight quilters. We will rent the entire condominium by the night. We have set up two complete sewing stations…so you are set to go.”
Furleigh said she has 40-employees at her five other locations and is looking for five people to join the local team.
Quilting in the Valley will be open 7-days a week, and opened for the first time this morning at 9:00.
