The Wisconsin Supreme Court has agreed to review a judge’s ruling that Republican lawmakers illegally hired private attorneys using taxpayer money.
Those attorneys were hired by Republican leaders as they anticipated legal challenges over redistricting.
Dane County Judge Stephen Ehlke voided the million-dollar contracts in April.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu asked the state’s high court to take the case – even before a decision from a state appeals court.
LeMahieu and Vos say the state Constitution gives them implied powers to retain legal counsel.
