Friday is the final day for eligible producers to sign up for the Conservation Reserve Program.
The Farm Service Agency says it has made some changes to make the program more appealing. The CRP was signed into law in 1985 and is now one of the largest voluntary conservation programs in the world.
The Commodity Credit Corporation makes annual payments based on the agriculture rental value of the land involved. The CRP contracts last 10-to-15 years. Backers say the program reduces soil erosion, protects the ability to produce food and fiber, reduces sediment in streams and lakes, improves water quality, establishes wildlife habitat, and enhances forest and wetlands.
