In American Legion Baseball, Manitowoc has advanced to the finals of the Regional Tournament at Wildwood Park in Sheboygan.
Legion Post 88 avenged 2 earlier losses to Sheboygan with a 3-1 victory last night.
All the scoring came in the 6th inning when the host team snapped a scoreless tie and took the lead on a sacrifice fly.
But, Coach Stan Diedrich’s team rallied in their half of the 6th on a 3-run homer by Brillion High School alum, Robert Shimek.
The big blast followed a base hit by Jackson Schmitz, a walk to Brandon Stephany and a double-steal.
Starter Ashton Portmann was the winning pitcher, allowing 4-hits to go along with 3-walks & 4-strikeouts. Josh Uhlhorn got the save, getting out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the 7th by inducing Sheboygan’s cleanup hitter to fly out to end the game.
Manitowoc is undefeated in Regional play and can qualify for the State American Legion Tournament in Plover by getting one more win.
Tonight at 6:30, they’ll battle the winner of an elimination game between Fond du lac Post-75 or Sheboygan Post 83.
A victory and they’re off to state while a loss means they’d have to beat their opponent a 2nd time.
