Floyd R. Shimek, age 90, a rural Manitowoc resident, passed away Saturday morning, July 31, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born February 4, 1931 in the Town of Franklin, son of the late Victor and Evelyn (Reznichek) Shimek. Floyd served in the United States Army, 82nd Airborne during the Korean War. On August 11, 1956 he married the love of his life, Janet Pribek, at St. Casimir’s Catholic Church, Northeim. Floyd was employed at Manitowoc Engineering as a machinist for 29 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community of Newton and volunteered his time for many church organizations. Floyd was also a 35 year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. In his spare time, he was an avid hunter and golfer and enjoyed fishing and camping. He also enjoyed traveling, gardening, and watching Packer, Brewer, and Badger games. Floyd loved all the family dogs, especially his dog Chloe. Above all, spending time with family was very important and he always made time to help family and friends with building and remodeling projects.
Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years: Janet Shimek; two daughters: Cindy (Dennis) Shimek Vogel and Lisa (Dale) Shimek Hietpas, all of Manitowoc; grandchildren: Heather Vogel, Madison, Bridget Hietpas (Significant other Brian Lane), Manitowoc, and Staff Sergeant Justin (Carly) Hietpas, Oahu, Hawaii; two step grandchildren: Dennis (Kari) Vogel Jr., La Crosse and Aaron (Alaina) Vogel, Indianapolis; one great-grandson: Brycen Hietpas; four step-great grandchildren: Jack, Stella, and Reed Vogel and Jordan, Logan, and Allyssa Vogel; five brothers: Virgil Shimek, Paul Shimek, Jerome (Mary) Shimek, William Shimek, and Ronald Shimek; two sisters-in-law: Janet Pribek and Shirley Barnes; and two special nieces: Christi (Russ) Hall and Kelly (Ron) Pratcher. Other nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and wonderful neighbors also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents: Victor and Evelyn Shimek; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Frank and Verona (Weiter) Pribek; his grandson: Christopher Vogel; and two brothers-in-law: Donald Pribek and Jack Barnes.
Cremation has occurred and a memorial service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community, 8100 Brunner Road, Newton. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. David Beaudry. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post 88 of Manitowoc. Following the Mass, Floyd will be laid to rest at St. Casimir’s Catholic Cemetery, Northeim.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 Noon on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community, Newton.
