The Manitowoc County Health Department announced this afternoon that half of all county residents have received a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine with 47 % having completed the full vaccine series.
County Health Officer Stephanie Lambert says that after a period of decline the number of vaccines given each week has risen steadily since the first week of July. The Department of Health Services says adults 65 and older lead the county in coverage with more than 84 % having received at least one dose while just 1 in 4 those age 12 to 15 have received a single dose.
Lambert adds, “Vaccines continue to be our most effective tool for fighting COVID-19. Fully vaccinated people are significantly less likely to become infected than non-vaccinated people. In the event of a breakthrough infection, they provide remarkable protection against hospitalization and death.”
More than 90 % of COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths statewide are from non-vaccinated people. Manitowoc County’s vaccine coverage is slightly behind the state average of roughly 53 % of residents having received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
