Manitowoc Public School District Superintendent Mark Holzman says they are keeping a “keen eye” on the rising COVID numbers as a new school year begins in less than a month.
“We are definitely taking heed from our local and state health officials-regular conversations about that. We definitely want to make sure that everyone is safe. We know there’s a percentage of students that are unable to be vaccinated so we are just going to watch right now and not make any changes to our current protocols.”
The State Department of Health Services has listed Manitowoc County as an area of high risk for community spread. Holzman says one recommendation -not a mandate- is that all wear a mask inside school buildings
“We are seeing an average of ten to twelve new positive cases daily. If we look back to a year ago that’s a lot less. A teacher group meeting was held recently at the UW-Green Bay Manitowoc Campus to go over goals and ideas for the school year. Next week our new teachers report with all staff returning the following week.”
The school year will begin with all in-person learning. The MPSD Superintendent adds that the situation is not nearly as dire a year ago- plus other options are available to families who feel comfortable having their children be taught online in the District’s K-12 Virtual School.
