For the past 15 years, the City of Manitowoc has allowed bow hunters to hunt for deer within the City limits in an attempt to curb the growing deer population within the city. The deer became a problem once the number of car vs deer accidents began to rise, leading to the implementation of the hunt.
Hunters have reported a total of 425 deer to officials in that time, which is an average of 30 deer per year. However, the hunt hasn’t seemed to make a difference in regard to accidents, there area still an average of 45 to 50 each year, the same as there was prior to the hunt. Roughly 100 bow hunting permits are issued every year, which allows the hunters to hunt on three large parcels of land owned by the city, or on private property is the landowner signs off on it.
