A sign condemning President Biden on Memorial Drive in Manitowoc is causing quite a stir among citizens in Manitowoc.
Police Chief Nick Reimer says they checked with the City Attorney on the legality of displaying such signs.
“A lot of times, signs that are political in nature are constitutionally protected,” Reimer explained. “They may offend people, but we have to go by the law, and we cannot break anybody’s constitutional rights of free speech.”
Reimer understands the concerns brought forth by those who’ve seen or heard of it.
“The F word out there is interesting to say the least,” Reimer said. “I’m certain that, especially for people with kids who see that, it’s tough to see, but again we have to look at the constitution. Sometimes signs can offend people, but still be legal, but not all the time. I don’t want a blanket statement saying that all signs are legal.”
