Some people may have looked at their water bill recently and wondered why it is higher than usual.
Officials in Two Rivers are warning that it may be due to what is known as phantom flushing. This occurs when there is a worn rubber flapper or an improperly adjusted flapper chain.
You can test your toilet by doing a dye test using tablets that are available at the Customer Service Counter at City Hall. Simply place the tablet in the tank of your toilet, and check the bowl. The water in the tank should change color, while the bowl water should remain clear. If after 10 minutes, the bowl water becomes dyed, you have a leak in the flapper valve.
You could also be going through more water if your float is set too high. Simply check the level of the water in your tank. If it is too high, lower the level of your float. If the toilet continues to run, even with the float-adjusted you should replace the refill valve with a new unit from your local hardware store or contact a licensed plumber for help.
