In loving memory of Patrick M. Downey, loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, son, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center in Manitowoc. Patrick was born in a snowstorm on May 19, 1938 to Patrick and Alice Coles Downey in Butte, MT where his early life was spent. After graduating from Butte Central in 1956, he joined the United States Navy Medical Corps in Oakland, CA. He was honorably discharged to return home to Butte to help his mother raise his siblings after the death of his father. He was sent on partial scholarship from the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth to Nursing School at Alexian Brothers in Chicago. On November 10, 1962 he was united in marriage to Kathleen Kleine in Chicago, IL. Following their marriage, they both worked in healthcare in Chicago. Patrick furthered his education studying anesthesia under Sister Yvonne Jenn in La Crosse, WI. Patrick spent most of his career employed with Holy Family Hospital as the Senior Anesthetist retiring after 40 years. Patrick was a member and active in W.A.N.A. (Wisconsin Association of Nurse Anesthetists) where he served as President for two terms along with being an active member of the A.A.N.A. (American Association of Nurse Anesthetists) where he served as President for one term. He continued to be active in advocating for the profession long after his practicing years. After retirement he was a jail nurse in Milwaukee County. Patrick also enjoyed tending bar at several different local establishments.
Patrick is survived by his wife, Kathy, children Timothy (Lisa) Downey and their children Erin, Emily (Jon) Kumm; Daniel (Jacqueline) Downey and their children Jordan (Samantha) and their children, Abigail (Vladimir) Rosario and a great great grandson due to be born in December, Christian, Saxon, and Rowan; James (Kaitlin) and a great grandson due to be born in the New Year 2022, Dakota (special friend Riley Kasper); John Downey; Patricia (Jason) Roth and their children Meagan and Patrick; Michael Downey and daughter Lauran; brothers and sisters, Mary, Tim, Alice, Geraldine, Teresa, Rose Marie, Mark, and Mike; nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Alice Downey, one sister, Loretta, and twin brothers, Tom and Jerry.
A celebration of life service will be held 4 p.m. on Friday, November 19, 2021 at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home. Officiating will be Patrick’s son, Deacon Timothy Downey. Relatives and friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home on Friday from 1 p.m. until the time of services at 4 p.m. Family and friends may join a live stream video of the memorial service on Friday at 4 p.m. on the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home Facebook page. Cremation has taken place at Harrigan Parkside Crematory and Chapel. Following the memorial service there will be a dinner held at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center, located on the south property of the funeral home.
The Downey family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of the HFM 5th Floor, ICU, hospitalists, and his long- term Doctors Gentile and Giriyappa for their expert care and treating him like family.
