The Manitowoc City Council is considering the creation of a group intended to help with equity in City Government.
During the October 18th Manitowoc Committee of a Whole meeting there was a Presentation from Laurie Crawford and Courtney Hansen on the creation of an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Development Council for the City of Manitowoc.
The resolution was tabled until a further discussion could be held. While on WOMT’s Jim and Rick Show this past Friday, Mayor Justin Nickels explained what the Council would do.
“The purpose is really just to create a community that is affirming and supporting of all people,” Mayor Nickels said. “That is a simple statement, and I’m sure everyone listening agrees with that.”
While this includes people of all races and ethnicities, this Council would not be strictly focused on skin color.
Nickels used the example of watching a City Council meeting.
Most people can watch on the City Website, but “What about someone who is blind, or deaf, or someone who doesn’t have access to that? How are they feeling included in their local government?” Nickels asked. “I’m not naïve. It’s not possible to cater to every single person, but we as a local government should do the best darn job that we can to make sure that every individual has access to their local government.”
If you want to get involved in the discussion regarding the formation of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Development Council, Mayor Nickels suggests you attend the City Council meetings, or contact your City Alderman.
