Governor Tony Evers addressed the State of Wisconsin last night during his State of the State address, and local representatives in State Government have responded.
Governor Evers explained that the state has a surplus of around $3.8 billion, which he said he plans on investing into Wisconsinites.
“We’d start by sending every Wisconsin resident a $150 surplus refund,” the Governor stated. “Under my plan, a family of four would receive $600 to help provide a little more wiggle room, and hopefully a little less stress about making ends meet.”
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu of Oostburg and other Republicans called the $150 payments an “election-year gimmick.”
The governor also touted the decrease in taxes that was passed this past year, a sentiment that caught Assemblyman Paul Tittl’s ears.
“If we were to have passed his budget this last time, you would have had a $1 billion increase in taxes. We instead passed a $3.2 billion decrease and the Governor took credit for it last night,” Tittl told Seehafer News. “I was very disappointed in that.”
The part of the address that Assemblyman Shae Sortwell noticed was the part that wasn’t there.
Sortwell voiced his disappointment in the Governor for not addressing the rise in crime and notable violent disasters.
In a news release, Sortwell stated, “Kenosha burned to the ground far too long before additional help was authorized. A violent felon released on low bail viciously plowed his vehicle through a crowd at Waukesha’s Christmas parade. Our cities are becoming more and more unsafe as crime runs rampant under the governor’s watch.”
