The Brillion Lions Boys Basketball Team continues their quest for a second state title in school history as they meet West Salem in a Division Three State semifinal this afternoon at The Kohl Center in Madison.
Junior Jeremy Lorenz says this trip to Madison is still a bit surreal.
“There were times I would be sitting there and I’ll think to myself, ‘Dang, I’m playing at state on Thursday’,” he explained. “I don’t think it has [sunk in] yet.”
Guard Mason Behnke is the only senior amongst the Lion starting five.
“I do take it upon me to keep this team together, keep us focused, not let it get too big, and stick to our principals,” he told Seehafer News. “I think it’s important for me to take that role, stay with it, and keep getting after it.”
Brillion Head Coach Chad Shimek says the bell cow all year long has been defense.
“Mason…is a really solid defender, and when you get guys that buy into it…it’s really easy to get guys to play together,” he explained.
As far as the other keys to a Lions victory, Shimek explained, “We have got to keep them out of the middle of the floor, and we have got to eliminate transition baskets. We have got to take all the things that come easy to them away and make them work hard. And if we do that, we are still going to have to shoot well, and take care of the basketball.”
Brillion is the 4 seed in the Division 3 field and comes into today’s game with a record of 27-2, while West Salem is the one seed and sports a 26-1 record.
Coverage of today’s game begins at 1:05 p.m. on 107.9 FM WOMT and at WOMTRadio.com.
