Libraries are known to serve a community’s need for knowledge, but in Door County, they also aim to help offer new opportunities for bountiful harvesting.
The Door County Seed Library kicked off its fourth year on Monday, helping distribute packets of seeds throughout the public library system in Door County. Since its launch in 2019, the program has distributed over 25,000 packets of seeds.
There is no limit to the number of seed packets that can be checked out, but the Seed Library notes on their website that they ask members to only take what they need and will plant in their personal garden. Typically, that is around six to eight packets.
Penne Wilson, a co-founder of the Seed Library, notes on the library’s website that there is no obligation to return seeds, but that members “are encouraged to learn basic seed saving techniques.” Seeds can be donated, however, at the Baileys Harbor and Sturgeon Bay libraries.
The following libraries are participating in the program:
- Baileys Harbor: (920) 839-2210
- Egg Harbor: (920) 868-2664
- Ephraim: (920) 854-2014
- Fish Creek: (920) 868-3471
- Forestville: (920) 856-6886
- Sister Bay-Liberty Grove: (920) 854-2721
