A $35,000 Brownfield Grant has been issued to the City of Manitowoc to help pay for the assessment of potential environmental contamination at an area property.
The grant was announced by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on Monday, with the funds coming from the DNR’s Wisconsin Assessment Monies program.
The environmental assessment will involve a three-acre property near the intersection of 11th Street and York Street. Manitowoc’s Community Development Authority purchased the property in 2019 to conduct blight elimination activities.
Brownfields are abandoned, idle and underused properties where reuse is stalled by potential contamination. A statement by the DNR notes that the assessment effort by the city is a significant step towards the property being properly reused as part of the city’s revitalization efforts.
Since 2009, the DNR’s Wisconsin Assessment Monies program has provided over $2.9 million to 71 communities across Wisconsin with the aim of helping address and redevelop run-down or underused properties that detract from a community’s vitality.
