The Brillion School District learned earlier this week that they were the recipient of the WIAA / Rural Mutual Insurance sportsmanship award.
The award was granted for conduct displayed at last month’s State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Athletic Director Jeff Capelle told Seehafer News, “It’s the community, it’s the pep band, it’s the students, it’s the fans, choir, coaches, student-athletes, parents. Everybody has a part in this.” Adding, “We talk all the time about how important it is to cheer for your team and not against the other team. We really emphasize that a lot.”
The Lions returned to the tournament for the first time since 2014, losing in the Division 3 semi-finals to the top seed, and D-3 runner-up West Salem 71-61.
Capelle continued, “It’s not just about the game. but everybody who’s a part of it and how important it is to treat everyone with the utmost respect and class. Anytime you are doing something whether it’s in the class room, in competition or in the community, all things matter that are kids and fans alike are doing the best they can to represent our school district and our community.”
It marks the fourth time Brillion has been chosen for the sportsmanship honor, with the first three coming in football in 2003, 2004 and again in 2010.
Award-winners receive a trophy and banner in recognition of the honor.
