As of yesterday, 22 current members (9 Democrats and 13 Republicans) of the State Assembly and six Senators have announced they are running for re-reelection in the fall.
25th Assembly District Representative Paul Tittl of Manitowoc is currently serving his 5th two-year term in Madison, and he told us that his fellow Republicans see now as a good time to leave without losing their seat to the opposite party.
He also said, “Then there are other ones where the Senator is retiring or moving on or doing something else and a couple of my colleagues in the Assembly are now running for the senate seat that their Senator is retiring from.”
Tittl says the inability of the Republican-controlled Legislature and Governor Tony Evers, a Democrat to co-exist at times may factor in somewhat.
But The Manitowoc Republican adds that some who are moving on have served a long time and they are ready to begin the next phase of their lives.
Democrat Sondy Pope of Mount Horeb, who announced her retirement yesterday was first elected to the Assembly in 2002.
Tittl is running for a 6th term in the fall.
