It’s been said there are not four seasons in Wisconsin, but rather, only two: winter and road construction.
Manitowoc Police Chief Nick Reimer reminds motorists that the latter is here and to “please be aware of your surroundings.”
“Please slow down for those workers. Try to get over as far as you can and just take them into consideration.” He added, “If anyone’s ever been a road worker, they know that cars zooming by are not a very comfortable thing. Stay off your phones and just try to pay attention as much as possible in those construction zones.”
Meanwhile, preparations are well underway as the city transitions to two-way traffic this summer, which will greatly impact the downtown.
“The major component of this is just the educational component, people getting used to the two-way streets.” Adding, “We’ll pay more attention to those areas. I don’t anticipate actually putting someone on overtime having to monitor it but we’ll have much more focus on the regular officers out there in those areas.”
Crews will be closing one lane from 8th Street to Waldo Boulevard to Washington Street, 10th Street, Water Street and North 8th Street in late July for approximately three weeks in order to change the signage and the stripes on the pavement for the official change effective 5:00 a.m. August 15th.
Chief Reimer also reminds citizens that “we can be everywhere at once. We have over 200 miles of road infrastructure in the city and approximately 6 to 8 officers patrolling them.”
