A Korean War veteran in Sturgeon Bay has been honored once again for his bravery, and heroics.
Representative Mike Gallagher was at the Sturgeon Bay City Hall last week, where he awarded retired Airman Robert Nelson with the Korea Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Conduct Medal.
The reason it took over 60 years for someone to realize that Nelson was eligible for these medals is not clear, but once former Door County Veterans Service Officer Scott MacFarlane found out, he got the paperwork going.
He also reached out to current Vet Services Officer Beth Wartella and Rep. Gallagher to make sure Nelson was honored.
Both medals are only awarded to members of the Air Force, with the Korea Defense Service Medal specific to those who aided the defense of the South Korean state between October 1st, 1966, and June 30th, 1974.
