A 21-year-old Kewaunee County woman is lucky to be alive after her vehicle collided with a barn in rural Manitowoc County early this morning.
A preliminary investigation by the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department indicates that the female driver was traveling northbound on State Highway 42, north of Irish Road in the township of Two Creeks when her vehicle left the roadway and entered the east ditch, striking a culvert causing her to go airborne and striking a nearby barn.
The impact caused her vehicle to catch fire.
Sheriff Dan Hartwig says that a 41-year-old Manitowoc County man ran quickly to the crash scene where he unbuckled her seatbelt, removing the woman from her vehicle.
She was transported by ambulance to the hospital for what were termed non-life-threatening injuries and has been charged with operating while intoxicated, first offense.
No other people or animals sustained injuries. Responding fire personnel was able to extinguish the vehicle and barn fires quickly.
The names of those involved, along with a dollar damage estimate have not been released.
Responding agencies assisting on the scene were Manitowoc Joint Dispatch, Two Creeks Fire and First Responders, Mishicot Fire and Ambulance, Two Rivers Fire and PK’s Towing.
