Early next month the Manitowoc Sunrise Rotary will be offering tours of the North Breakwater Lighthouse.
The lighthouse, which underwent a facelift a few years ago, serves not only as part of our city’s maritime history but also as an icon letting people on Lake Michigan know that they are in the Clipper City.
Paul Roekle from the Rotary was on WOMT’s After Further Review with Jason and Tina Prigge this week, where he described the tour.
“The actual tour is on the 4th of July,” he explained. “It’s in conjunction with Manitowoc’s Fourth on the Shore, and the Wisconsin Maritime Museum’s SubFest.”
The tours will begin at Lakeside Park in Manitowoc, which is the area by the recently constructed restroom on the Mariners Trail.
Roekle explained that from there you will “follow the blue rail out to the Army Corps of Engineers dredging containment area, and follows the breakwater out to the lighthouse…It is a beautiful experience walking from that parking lot out to the lighthouse.”
There will be several tours taking place between 11:00 and 5:00 p.m.
This is the third year the Rotary is offering tours, which are free of charge.
