The nation is once again split following the decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The landmark case from 1973 made it so abortions were legal in the United States.
The main arguments for the overturning of the longstanding law were because it is believed that the ruling exceeded the Supreme Court’s constitutional authority and that abortion is the same as killing an infant.
Those in favor of Roe v Wade believe this overturning is infringing on a woman’s right to do with their body as they choose.
Two legislators from Wisconsin have issued very different statements on the ruling. Republican Congressman Glenn Grothman said that the Supreme Court, “made the correct and much-needed decision.”
The 6th District Congressman went on to say that “when ultrasounds were practically unheardof, 47 states had made abortion illegal. Now, with accurate ultrasounds, it is clear to all Americans that unborn children are human beings.”
On the other side of the political Aisle, Democratic Representative Ron Kind stated “Removing this fundamental right will have devastating consequences for women and families across the nation…Millions of women will be living with fewer freedoms than their mothers and grandmothers, and puts every American’s right to privacy on shaky ground. We can’t go backwards.”
While this ruling did not outright ban abortions, it did leave it up to the States to follow the laws on their books.
There were several rallies held around the area, including in Sheboygan, Appleton, and Green Bay over the weekend protesting the ruling.
Governor Tony Evers has stated that he is considering executive action on Wisconsin’s current abortion law.
