The overturning of Roe V Wade has led to many people voicing varying opinions on the topic.
From politicians to private citizens, everyone’s opinions differ. We heard from 6th District Congressman Glenn Grothman last week, who supported the Supreme Court’s ruling, saying it was a “correct and much-needed decision.”
However, his opponent in the August 9th primary, Douglas Mullenix, has a different opinion.
He told Seehafer News, “Look, I’m not pro-abortion, but at the end of the day, me being not pro-abortion does not mean I can tell you what you can and can’t do.”
The 32-year-old Republican from Menasha went on to explain his interpretation of what our founding fathers said while laying the groundwork for the American political system.
“If you look at the words and the writings of [Thomas] Jefferson around the time when he was writing it, he talks about, and it’s actually in the Declaration[of Independence], certain rights are endowed by our creator,” he said. “One of those everybody has heard is life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. So the way I interpret that and look at that is that the right to liberty was given by our creator, and if that’s the case, it’s not a states versus federal rights because both of those must answer to a higher power.”
One issue that is being debated would be around a provision for the life of the mother.
Mullenix told us that the issue with that provision stems from the fact that two or more doctors need to basically approve the abortion.
He said that he, to an extent, agrees with what Governor Tony Evers and Attorney General Josh Kahl are doing.
He explained, “I don’t agree with Governor Evers on a lot, but my understanding is he and [Josh] Kaul are trying to if nothing else push for a temporary hold on that so that that provision for the life of the mother can be at least reviewed and most likely at least carried out until a proper review process can happen.”
Mullenix said that he knows that his stance puts him on a little bit of an island in the Republic Party, noting that he may be the only member of the party in the entire country to have this stance.
