High School football practice begins today (August 2nd) in the lakeshore area and around Wisconsin.
After the equipment is issued, players will hit the practice field for workouts in anticipation of the 2022 season.
The WIAA says the earliest scrimmage date is Thursday, August 11th with the first game to be played on August 18th or 19th.
Meanwhile, the National Federation of State High School Associations has announced some football rules changes coming this fall.
Based on the action at its annual rules meeting in January, two significant changes are on the way.
One of them now permits a player to purposefully throw an incomplete forward pass without warranting an intentional grounding penalty, provided the passer is outside of “the pocket” and the pass reaches the neutral zone or the extension of the neutral zone beyond the sideline.
The other major change is actually a new definition of a chop block, which is now described as a combination block by two or more teammates against an opponent other than the runner, where one of the blocks is below the waist and one is above the waist.
Previously, the defensive player’s knee was used to determine the high and low components of a chop block.
