The day has come.
After months of discussion, followed by a year of planning, the streets running through downtown Manitowoc are now flowing with two-way traffic.
Construction workers were out late last night starting the changeover process on 8th and 10th Streets, namely removing barrels and setting up certain intersections.
We spoke with Mayor Justin Nickels, who said that you will be seeing flashing red lights at some intersections for a while yet, “So we can make sure we monitor traffic flows, see where people are going to be going, so we can make sure the signalized intersections are appropriate.”
Also, you will see that the lights that indicate the bridges are up are not installed yet.
The reason is simple, they aren’t here yet.
“That’s a supply chain issue, but that should be done very soon,” Mayor Nickels told Seehafer News.
This change does go all the way north to Waldo Boulevard, meaning a major change is now in place at the intersection of North 11th and Huron Streets.
That is the intersection where the former McKinley Academy building is located, as well as the A-Store gas station.
That is now a two-way stop, not a four-way stop.
“That will be a stop east and westbound on Huron,” the mayor explained. “Traffic on 11th will not stop.”
Brix will also be holding a traffic-watching party starting at 11:00 this morning.
They are located at the corner of Washington Street and South 8th Street, and we will be down there asking people what they think about the changeover and how traffic has been taking to the change.
