An important and sentimental part of Manitowoc Lincoln High School’s rich history has been reborn as many gathered outside the school’s natatorium Saturday morning to officially dedicate the school’s Council Centennial Ring
The original ring was a part of the original design of the school by Chicago landscape architect Jens Jensen nearly 100 years ago, where students and staff would gather outside just to enjoy the day or just to “get away for a while”. it deteriorated over time and was eventually removed, but thanks to hard work and nearly $46,000 raised, a dream became a reality just after 10 a.m. Saturday morning. Peggy Krey, who represents the Gift Committee of the class of 1972, says this day is made possible by putting dreams and words into action.
“It’s with great joy that the class of 1972 in commemoration with our 50th reunion and the 100th anniversary of Lincoln High School gifts this ring as a gathering place for conversation, song. storytelling, dance learning and inspiration. A place to be seen and heard.”
Wendy Marshall Sullivan graduated from Lincoln 50 years ago. She says her father was a teacher at Wilson Junior High in Manitowoc for many years and education has always been a huge part of her life. Wendy now lives in Green Bay where she is a nurse and says being a part of the ceremony brought back so many fond memories.
“There’s nothing better than paying it forward. We had an opportunity to basically live and breath for four years on this beautiful campus. We wanted to leave a legacy to the future generations, and it just makes my heart sing.”
Lincoln High School Principal Lee Thennes says this day will live on into perpetuity saying
“Forever, the class of 1972 centennial class ring will be a part of Lincoln Hig School and it’s traditions. On behalf of the students and staff at Lincoln High School, both past and present, I simply would like to thank you for your generosity and love that you have shown to your alma mater, Lincoln High School.”
Manitowoc Lincoln High School will be celebrating it’s 100th year in 2023 and is the oldest public school in Wisconsin.
