The following article was written by Lakeshore’s United Visionaries Board Member Natasha Kahn regarding an upcoming event at the Manitowoc Public Library.
On Thursday, September 15, at 6 PM, Lakeshore’s United Visionaries (L.U.V.) will be holding a virtual panel discussion/community conversation hosted by Manitowoc Public Library named “Intersectionality: Engaging Greater Conversations.” Our five-person panel will feature L.U.V. Board Members. Here’s a quick overview of what people that tune into the livestream can expect.
To start things off, after we all introduce ourselves, we will present a short overview of Intersectionality, just to make sure that everyone is entering into the conversation from a common jumping-off point. From there, we’ll go over the Intersecting Axes of Privilege, Domination, and Oppression. At that point, we’ll discuss the panelists’ lived experiences with intersectionality, after which time the panel will dedicate the remaining time to addressing and discussing questions from community members that are following along.
Our goal for the evening is to pass along information that will result in people feeling empowered by what they take in during the panel’s presentation. They’ll also have an opportunity to gain some insight into Intersectionality and discover why it’s so crucial to understand what Intersectionality is in the first place.
Everyone has intersectional identities—no one is just one thing. During this panel discussion, we’ll address this concept and ensure community members are equipped to explore their own intersectional identities. One of the many reasons for understanding what intersectionality is and why it is important—especially to minorities—is because without thinking about people’s various identities, we cannot begin to understand their experiences and help to uplift them. As these conversations grow, so follows understanding.
This panel is the second in a three part series in which L.U.V. is addressing topics that we feel are pertinent to our community members and are necessary to understand in order for us to grow together. We are grateful Manitowoc Public Library is partnering with us to present topics that are relevant and timely.
L.U.V. was created in the wake of the 2020 George Floyd murder. Our mission is to uplift the lives of marginalized individuals. Our goal is to recognize intersectional identities through allyship, awareness, education, understanding, and love. We are devoted to helping and supporting our racially and ethnically diverse community, making our community more welcoming and inclusive. Learning how to separate misinformation from fact will help make our community a safer place for everyone.

We hope that you will join us for “Intersectionality” the evening of September 15. The conversation will be livestreaming on both Manitowoc Public Library’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/manitowoclibrary) and their YouTube channel. Should you want to participate in the discussion, just type your comment or question into the “Comments” area on either platform. Time permitting, we’ll include what we can into the conversation.
