The Chief of Police in Kiel has announced his retirement.
Chief Dave Funkhouser made the announcement in a post on the Kiel Police Department Facebook page.
He explained that he began battling a serious health condition in 2013, but after 9 years of fighting coupled with additional stress, the unspecified condition has taken its toll.
Chief Funkhouser explained that he will be working with the staff in Kiel to ensure a smooth transition, as Captain Joseph Jeanty begins training to take over the position.
Captain Jeanty has been in law enforcement since 1995, spending time with the Kiel, New Holstein, and Elkhart Lake Police Departments as well as the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department.
In his statement, Chief Funkhouser said, “The City of Kiel is a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family. I will always reflect fondly on my time here as your Chief of Police. It has been an honor to serve this community.”
The Chief’s time in office will officially end in January after nearly 34 years in law enforcement, 17 of those with the Kiel Police Department.
