A 21-year-old male is in custody after allegedly being involved in stealing a vehicle from Manitowoc’s northside late Wednesday night.
An officer with the Manitowoc Police Department was on routine patrol when he heard over his portable radio that the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Deputies were in pursuit of a stolen vehicle requesting mutual aid assistance from Manitowoc Police which was granted.
The officer heard that the vehicle in question had stopped on South 10th and Marshall Street and three occupants had run from the vehicle.
A perimeter was set up when police noticed one of the suspects appeared, walking in the area.
When approached, he denied having any involvement in the crime saying he was simply walking to Washington Park to sleep in a restroom because he was homeless.
The officer was suspicious of the story and based on the suspect’s actions, probable cause was established, and he was told he was under arrest.
He resisted at first when told he was under arrest but was eventually subdued and taken to the Manitowoc County Jail without further incident.
The deputy’s dashcam video confirmed that the suspect was one of three individuals who exited the vehicle.
Referred charges include Resisting an Officer, Obstructing an Officer, and Passenger-Operating a Vehicle Without The Owner’s Consent.
