As Wisconsinites are continuing to bag and tag their fall deer harvest, the DNR is reminding hunters to get their deer tested for chronic wasting disease.
CWD is an always-fatal contagious neurological disease that affects the nervous system of deer, elk, moose, and caribou.
The disease can spread through contact with an infected animal’s saliva, urine, or feces.
There are several ways deer can be tested.
There are self-service kiosks all over the state, or you can purchase an at-home lymph node sample kit.
Many meat processors and taxidermists will also test for you, or you can make an appointment with local DNR staff.
For more information on CWD and testing options, visit the DNR website.
