Three members of the Manitowoc Lincoln Girls Tennis Team have qualified for next week’s WIAA State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament in Madison by virtue of their play at a Division One Sectional Meet held yesterday at the Fox Cities Racquet Club.
Junior Olivia Minikel captured a Sectional Title by winning all three of her matches in straight sets.
She only lost two games in six sets and improves to 27-0 on the season.
Joining Olivia at state will be the number one doubles tandem of senior Hannah Dvorak and freshman Taylor Peterson.
They clinched their berth by defeating a team from Fond Du Lac in straight sets and placed third in their flight and take a 21 and 7 record to Madison.
Meanwhile, Freshman Jordin Popp lost both her matches to place fourth in three singles but finishes her season with an outstanding record of 16 and 6.
Head Coach Stephanie Henschel said she was “really pleased with the day. To win your first match is really nerve-racking, especially at the 1 spot. Both flights did a fantastic job.”
Henschel also told Seehafer News the game plan for the weekend.
“I have already told them that they will have Friday off,” she said. “They missed school, so they need to catch up on some of their schoolwork. Monday, we will see if we can get inside at the Y, Tuesday we will see if we can get inside at the Y.”
They still have to decide if they will be leaving for State on Thursday or Friday.
The draw for the field will be held this morning and play begins next Thursday at the Nielsen Tennis Complex in Madison.
