Charley Trippi, a 1959 College Football Hall of Fame inductee who played halfback at Georgia in the 1940s, died yesterday (October 19th) in Athens, Georgia.
Born December 14th, 1921 in Pittston, Pennsylvania, he was 100 and the oldest living Hall of Famer.
A unanimous first-team All-American and a Georgia legend, Trippi is often cited among the greatest to ever play the game.
National Football Foundation Chairman, Archie Manning, said “There are not enough superlatives in the dictionary to describe Charley Trippi. He is a national treasure and was a truly special human being who became a great ambassador for the game.”
Manning continued, “He led Georgia to the national title and he did the same with the then Chicago Cardinals in the Pros, earning himself spots in both the College and Pro Football halls of fame. We are extremely grateful for his contributions and he will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time of loss.”
