This week’s work session by The Two Rivers City Council included a discussion over concerns about golf cart usage within the city limits.
City Manager Greg Buckley says the main arterial thoroughfares addressed were Forest Avenue and 22nd Street.
“Golf carts are supposed to yield to overtaking traffic, or traffic approaching from behind them,” he explained. “That does mean they tend to go over to the curb in areas where there are no cars parked and use the parking lanes…That does mean sometimes when you are on streets with a lot of parking, sometimes golf cart drivers will be seen weaving in and out a bit of the parking lane, and back to the traffic lane.”
A second issue deals with small children riding along as passengers.
“Oftentimes, people will see children in the rear-facing seats on golf carts, which is legal, without restraints,” Buckley explained. “Some don’t have, as original equipment any sort of restraint system.”
58 golf carts are currently registered legally for use in Two Rivers.
Buckley says it’s likely the Council will discuss this issue in further detail, including some possible ordinance changes, sometime in January.
